Dr. Shih-Wei Sun was previously UMC’s Vice Chairman, CEO, and COO and was Venture & Operation Partner with GSR Capital and Senior Advisor with McKinsey, Lam Research and Spansion as well.
Responsible for the operation of UMC 6”, 8”, 12” wafer fabs, Central R&D, and global foundry business development.
As UMC CEO, successfully led UMC’s restructuring and strong recovery from the 2008 global financial crisis.
Chairman of Advanced Micro Foundry (Silicon Photonics Co. in Singapore), Smarter Micro (RF Front-End Fabless Co.) and board director of UMC, Unimicron, Epistar, global tech companies, Private Equity & VC firms, A*STAR in Singapore, and McCormick School of Engineering, Northwestern University.
Previous Global Executive Vice President of Tsinghua Unigroup and CEO of XMC leading overall transformation project through the global pandemic.
Early career at Motorola Semiconductor in Austin, Texas working on 68000 series, Power PC microprocessors, microcontrollers, and memory products.
Over 60 granted patents, publications respectively, and served as the Device, Asia Committee Chairman of IEDM (International Electron Device Meeting).
Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Northwestern University in 1986 and recipient of the 2016 Distinguished Career Achievement Award for Alumni of Materials Science and Engineering, Northwestern University.
